The Flamingo Resort
Santa Rosa, California
The Flamingo Resort is a mid-century marvel in The Valley of the Moon. For 63 years, The Flamingo has been a beacon of leisure.
The buildings, set on a 10-acre campus rendered with natural materials and iconic angular silhouettes, are the work of master architect Homer A. Rissman. Lounge by the pool and enjoy drinks from the comfort of your seat when you book one of the luxurious bird houses or nests. Wild Bird Poolside Dining & Tiki Bar serves locally sourced, responsibly indulgent and clucking-ly delicious Cal Pacific comfort fare. Flamingo’s Lazeaway Club - created in collaboration with Anderson Pugash and Benson Wang of Palm House and The Dorian, two of San Francisco’s hottest hangouts, takes diners on a vacation within a vacation, allowing travelers and locals to explore the diverse flavors of the Pacific from a Californian vantage point. Inspiration for Lazeaway Club stems from humble master of balance – a flamingo named Fernando – the social bird and guru of good vibes living life on vacation. Fernando reminds us that life is better when we flock together, no matter which way the current flows.
BODE's New Flagship
Dodo bird to the rescue
7007 Melrose Ave, Hollywood
photos from BODE
Following its NYC flagship Bode founder Emily Bode's LA outpost sends a timely message. Designed by the interior firm Green River Project co-founded by Bode’s husband and collaborator Aaron Aujla, Bode LA doesn’t look like a store at all. “We wanted it to feel like you’re walking into a museum,” says Aujla. A natural history museum with million-year-old mastodon ribs purchased by Aujla at an auction and displayed above shelves labeled with genus names along with a near a convincing plaster cast of a dodo bird skeleton. “A more soulful spin, essentially, on buy-less-buy-better." The dodo bird skeleton was selected for more than just vibes. It was the first furnishing Aujla bought for the store as a symbol, he explains, of what can happen when humans don’t respect the natural world." The Bode Los Angeles flagship store located in Hollywood, California is a space for education, preservation, & reexamining humanity's place within natural history. Featuring a wide selection of Bode clothing from its current collections, Los Angeles exclusives, one-of-a-kind garments, children's wear, shoes, and accessories.

The movie ‘The Birds’
Bodega Bay, California
Photography: Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty
Alfred Hitchcock fans can recognize Bodega Bay in California as the real-life town setting of his film The Birds. The property next door to the iconic schoolhouse has gone on sale for $1.1m via Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty. In Hitchcock’s 1963 horror classic, Tippi Hedren’s character and screaming school children escape from the clapboard building as birds attack them. The Victorian building echoes the Italianate style of the nearby schoolhouse, known as Potter School House. This three-bedroom home has rows of tall sash windows looking out onto the schoolhouse and at St Teresa of Avila Church, immortalized in both The Birds and Ansel Adams’ photography.
