Make yourself a Michelada from our recipe below and join us as we chat with CHEECH MARIN about his family CBD venture and his upcoming Center for Chicano Art & Culture at Riverside Art Museum. We headed out to some of LA's oldest neighborhoods rich with vibrant history - cruisin' Whittier Boulevard to Olvera Street "The birthplace of Los Angeles" as we explored East LA, Boyle Heights, and the El Mercadito area - then back downtown to the Hotel Figueroa fully restored in original Spanish Colonial Revival style as an Urban Lifestyle Hotel. Tacos by the pool at Veranda, even more tacos at Guerrilla Tacos in the Arts District plus taco salsas & hot sauces from El Machete. Top it all off with our Michelada Mix - your poquito del sol playlist!
SCENE + SEEN
FROM WHITTIER BOULEVARD TO OLVERA STREET
Eastside LUV wine bar y Queso
Welcoming Mariachi mural by famed painter Robert Vargas, live music, DJ spins, karaoke/mariachi-oke bar is décorated in red velvet damask heirloom walls with paintings by local Chicano artists. Famous for their Micheladas - made special by adding candied Tamarindo for an extra touch of spice. Don't ask for the queso - there isn't any...
When you squeeze in a reservation just before closing and just one taco won't do... we begged the kitchen for more! Yucatan style fried fish taco with habanero achiote glaze, shaved cabbage, sour orange pickled onion & mayo-crema DELICIOSO! Freshly crafted cocktails, lighthearted wait staff & superb service - we're not the only ones hoping Senate Bill 389, continuing to-go cocktail sales, will pass.
HOTEL FIGUEROA DTLA
Hotel Figueroa is one of the longest standing hotels in Downtown LA Opened in 1926 by the YWCA it was a place solo female travelers could check in without a male chaperone - attracting professional women from all over the world and becoming a powerful collective. Most recently it has been restored to its original 1926 Spanish Colonial splendor as a boutique hotel with Veranda Al Fresco dining.

Q&A with CHEECH
Did you know that your film, Born in East LA has become part of the diversity and inclusion curriculum in Universities? When you wrote the film, was part of your intention to educate people on the realities of the Latino community living in the United States?
CHEECH "Born in East L.A. was based on a real event where a young man was mistakenly deported to Mexico although he was born in America. The reality of the situation was real to Latinos. The trick was to make it into a comedy. I have always found that a message is more effective if you slip it in their coffee so that you don’t feel like you’re being preached to."
As strong supporters of the Arts we recognize how important it is in the cultural education of our youth. We're excited about the opening of "The Cheech" Art Museum. How long have you collected art and are you an artist yourself? Is there a time period that your art is focused on related to the struggles of the Latino/Chicano community?
CHEECH "Chicano Art started out as the visual component of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement of the late sixties. As the artists developed more they all went off into their own private artistic concerns, but their initial efforts were always viewed as “news from the front”. How things looked like in their neighborhoods. I started collecting Chicano Art around 1985. I have always collected something all my life - baseball cards, marbles, whatever. I self- educated myself in art from a very young age, around eleven or twelve, eventually becoming a professional potter."
Tell us about your music? Are you still writing and performing?
CHEECH "I play guitar and sing every day. Thank God my wife is also a musician or we would drive each other nuts! My wife Natasha and I split our time between Los Angeles and Joshua Tree California."
We know you believe strongly in the health benefits of CBD products when used correctly. You created a line of CBD products and tea with Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical. What is your favorite wellness product from your line?

What one song inspires you to wake up and seize the day?
