YEAR IN REVIEW special edition


2021 sure feels like a century gone by in a New York minute as we look back to reflect on all that has come to pass. The very meaning of 'Auld Lang Syne' (old long since) couldn't be more apposite since we toasted in last year's eve with our Teeni, Tini, Tiki issue... The ghosts of blogs past, present and those of yet to come - are ringing in the year with plenty o' time to catch up on all our 2021 issues before the clock strikes midnight...

Abigail Gullo Got it Right!

In the February issue Love + Voodoo we interviewed Ms. Abigail Gullo Dame Hall of Famer / Eater New Orleans Bartender of The Year - she predicted the Best Bar in NYC to be opening at Gage & Tollner (read the full interview here ABIGAIL GULLO) The SUNKEN HARBOR CLUB at G&T - (officially organized in NYC in the 1800s) is a private club compendium of historians, artists, poets, explorers and adventurers "dedicated to the advancement of Human Society through exploration & experiment in the Arts & Sciences". The club re-opens Dec 29th, 2021 with more High Seas Shakedowns of piracy concoctions, meetings of the grogmasters, rum rumors and cocktail culture deciphered from the original drinks served from its pages of the "Compendium Bibendium".

In our East LA issue, we interviewed Cheech awaiting the opening of The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum which is now set to open May 8th, 2022. During our visit we fell in love with Guerrilla Tacos - at its original location in LA's Arts District (read story here EAST LA). Chef has since moved on to his next adventure - inside of the Ace Hotel in Kyoto, Japan. Contemporary tacos and cocktails from Michelin-ranked rockstar Chef Wes Avila restaurant PIOPIKO and private hiding place POKITO adorned in wallpaper of photographer Katsumi Watanabe's "Shinjuku 1965-97".

Jon put SUBLIME on the map with their self-titled album selling over 27 million copies which has since been listed as one of the most well-regarded albums of the 1990s by Rolling Stone Magazine. Wyland's Whaling Wall #12 SAVED!

Laguna Beach, California

In our summer issue where we caught up with renown Marine Artist WYLAND of the Whaling Walls (100 life-sized murals around the world that he painted for free to bring awareness to ocean conservation) Whaling Wall #12 was in danger of being destroyed by the building's owners who wanted to develop the building and get rid of the mural offering The Wyland Foundation to move it, but experts assessed that it could not be moved without suffering irreplaceable damage (read the full story here in COASTING ALONG). We're happy to report today WW12 is safe - protected under the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990

In loving memory of Sebastian Jobst, fearless Director, Writer and Cinematographer with a unique and poetic visual sense. His films are journeys to the inner core of the human being. We were honored to interview Sebastian (SEBASTIAN JOBST INTERVIEW) deeply saddened of his passing. Grateful for his brilliance in capturing "Ama'ara - the Song of the Whales", a documentary fairy tale for troubled times.

And to all tremendous beings who have come to pass... in gratitude for the indelible marks they have left on our hearts. May 2022 bring to us new hopes, new insights, new adventures, new beginnings and Auld Acquaintances never to be forgotten!
